Playing catch-up ...

We've finally posted some more pictures (Doubtful Sound and Sydney)!

The older batch is from our New Zealand trip in April. We spent a whole day kayaking on beautiful Doubtful Sound. Initially misidentified by colonial Europeans, the area's Sounds are all actually Fjords (or Fiords, hence the region's name: Fiordland.) It rained the entire day on the fjord, but if anything the moody grey tones added to the mystique of the place. The photography, however, suffered accordingly.

The newer set is from Sydney. We spent about 24 hours or so in Sydney on our way up to Cairns, one of the gateways to the Great Barrier Reef. And in response to Lana's comment: don't worry! We did find Nemo -- several Nemos, in fact -- but further north of Cairns, indeed. More on that later.

We'll continue to churn through old material while we work away for the next few months here in Canberra.

Oh, and you'll notice in the photo galleries that there's a new way to view the photos. It basically lets you see all the photos at once without thumbnails. This might be good for anyone with a low-bandwidth connection -- you can let all the photos load in the background while you do other things online. Or you might just prefer it this way. :)

On the Move

Hello any faithful readers still checking after the recent posting drought.

For the time between living in Melbourne and living in Canberra, we planned a couple of trips, which have been great fun but not great for web access. After New Zealand, we spent a week in Tasmania. Highlights include walking through a big snowstorm in May and meeting some people who lived in a tree for a couple of years (more on that later, with pictures!). Now we're in Sydney for one day before we fly up to Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef. This time I have my camera with me (and more importantly for you, Anatole has his digital camera with him), so you may even get to see some Sydney pictures.

In other news, we managed to beat our Melbourne record of finding and moving into an apartment in 5 days. In Canberra it only took 3 days. We are now the proud and happy residents of a house near ANU, sharing with a girl who's a student and a guy who works for the environment ministry (sound familiar?). Our roommates are extremely nice and friendly, and the house is beautiful - it even has 2 hammocks in the backyard!

When we get back from this trip, we'll be settled into Canberra for the next two months, so you can expect more postings and pictures soon - really! :)

Satisfying the Critics

Well, here it is. For everyone who has been demanding photos of cities, there is now a fairly large and comprehensive photo gallery of Melbourne -- the city we've called home for about three months now. There are two galleries, actually: Melbourne by Day and Melbourne by Night.

So what do you think? Is Melbourne all it's cracked up to be? Or have we been exaggerating?

Either way, we're leaving Melbourne in about a week for Canberra, where we'll be living for the remainder of our time in Australia (about two months). Melbourne: you've been great! We'll miss you.
